Saw Pete Best Monday evening Well a coworker of mine who has a wife who works for a local promoter gave me 4 free tickets to see Pete Best and his band Monday evening. He was a good solid drummer with great timing and feel for the music, and the band really rocked dispite a less than spectacular turn out (they were competing with a large local jazz fest, and the event wasn't well advertised). Some how with all the rumors about him being so much better than Ringo I kind of expected more. I guess this is one of those cases where the man couldn't live up to his own legend. It also could be that he isn't as good as he once was (age gets the best of all of us sooner or later)? I'm certainly not criticizing him or his playing, I expected him to be "better than Ringo", and I'm not sure from the performance I saw that he is (or was). He didn't play any solos, nothing he did was really technically difficult, but then that vintage of Rock (50's early 60's) doesn't call for a lot of fancy fill work, etc. They had two drummers on stage Pete and his son, I thought when I saw the two matching drum sets, that they would do something a little more impressive with them, maybe a little mini-drum battle, etc. I'm guessing I just went in there with my expectations set too high, and dissapointed myself. I would recommend you go see them if them come to a venue near you. They are a great rock party band, that sounds very close to the early Beatles in style, and Pete is definately a very proficient drummer with great timing, and feel. He definately made it look easy, and seemed to have fun doing it. I must say I had a great time, I guess I shouldn't have put so much stock in all the Beatles myth, legend, and hype. What do you think Pete Best / Ringo Starr who was or is the better drummer? |
