I remebered seeing one of these sets in a store, and I verified it on line, the drums are different diameters, and the set originally shipped with two sets of heads: the mesh heads for silent practice, and a set of regular heads for playing out in small venues. I would guess you should be able to put standard heads on and it will sound OK. Drums with only batter heads were popular back in the 70s for a little while, I guess some people liked the sound.
