Well, The Gretsch's sound good..and I had spent some time combing thru a couple of kits G.C. had in the showroom. I found the build quality on the Gretsch Catalinas to be lower than that of the pdps and Pearl Visions. The cnc work (lug and tom mount holes) on the Gretsch Cat. Kick drum(s) were IMO poorly drilled. There were chips of maple ply flaking from around some of the holes and there were a few issues with loose hardware (lugs and bass drum tom mount) This is just a minor annoyance and it's something I will check for on any kit at head change time. I also found the kick drum mounted double tom mount to be a bit wimpy.. Take into consideration that these are just my observations. I do "go through" a shell pack before I will consider whether to buy it or not. The most important factor is sound. The Cats. do sound nice. To me.. the pdp's got 'em beat
in sound, build quality and value. I am not knocking Gretsch. If you are going to opt for them., I'd save my money and go for the Renouns. They are fine drums!
