I play a Mapex M-Birch. The outter shell has a maple ply over birch plys. I get some really nice tones, depth, and warmth out of them. I am able to get pretty close to reproducing the tones you'd get from an all maple shell. I have factory heads on the kit now, but aim to re-skin the set with remo pin-stripes in order to attempt to get even closer to that maple sound.
I really like my Mapex set because of the sounds I am able to reproduce, the type of mounts used for the toms (rim mounts), and the tom stands and mounts themselves. The hardware is very durable and versatile. I can position everything within the perfect striking distance and angle. The finish is a laquered finish and virtually flawless. I have no problem with taking this kit out for shows (whenever I might get one).
I started out playing on Ludwigs, but I really like this Mapex kit I have. My dream kit would be an all maple DW.
