I have a Pacific 602, on a 20" bass drum, since I have the drum frame I also have the pedal c-clamped down to the footboard to prevent any movement.

I ended up replacing the spring since I felt like it did NOTHING but go from way too much give down to no tension at all. Since replacing with something stronger I have noticed that everything
is more fluid and the pedal stays with my foot better. Nice rebound from the spring.

I don't think your question is noobish at all... I have yet to find a site that goes into any detail
on bass pedal adjustments and what they do.
