The whole purpose of the Danmar metal patches is to increase the click sound of the beater... You should be using the felt side of the beater to get this click sound. Anything harder will rebound off quickly and cause this problem you are describing. Another thing to consider is that all of the rebound you are getting is energy wasted since it isn't being transfered to the kick. This will decrease your volume
toward whatever audience you have.
The felt beater should provide you enough "click" and allow enough transfer of energy through the patch to the drum head. Remember you are hitting a thick metal disk.. and a layer of foam.
I used these patches for a time when recording and found very quickly that they
increased fatigue in my feet. I had to remove the metal patches to save damaging my feet.
There are other methods to get the click sound you are asking. Try taping quarters to the inside of the drum head, or a credit card sized piece of plastic in the same area. Shoot go hogwild and experiment with lots of fun stuff there... aluminum pie pans, foil, CDs, soda cans, etc...
If you are going to mic the bass drum to get this "click" sound I think it rests in the 2-4khz range... So play around with your eq on the bass mic and you should be able to get the beater impact to come through.
Another thing to note: Many of the kick sounds you hear with that "click" sound might actually be triggered drums. So due to the wonders of recording engineers you have layered sounds instead of the natural bass drum sound.
