Tell me if I've got this wrong but,

To clarify
HiHats play - 1 + a
and you want to know if you should bring your left hand up on the 'a'?
You can look at it this way; when you play "1 + a" with just your right hand the pattern may turn out to have a more swinging sort of feel, but, when the left hand is brought up on the 'a' it will naturally unless, intentionally altered, have a straighter feel.

Another idea; If three sixteenths in a row is to much, try '1 + a" but on 2 where the snare drum is usually placed, drop that right hand out, then pick it back up on the + of 2.

So it really depends on the tempo that you can physically handle the pattern at, or simply an easier way to get a feel across.
