Re: Who's got the best snare sound? This one is a really hard question because there are so many choices. I think my favorite would be George Strait's drummer on his Live DVD. Now understand I an a Blues/Rocker and his though ok is not my style of playing music, though I did play for him for a very short perioud many years ago. The snare has a very distinctive Pop but it is very deep resanuance. That snare is made of African Mahogany (Probally Steam Bent) and had a Rock Maple wood rim on it. The sound of that snare is almost orgasmic! It could be used in any gene of music!
It is so different drim any I have heard. My second is Chris Layton's snare with Stevie Ray Vaughn.
My choices in snares are Ludwig Black Beauty Bronze, a Maypex Hammered Bronze Black Panther, or a 20 Ply African Mahogany from Shine. So far! At this time I have on hold a solid African Mahogany kit ordered from Pearl. I have also been working on a deal with Shine.
