My basic advice would be:
If you want more thud, damp the reso head, if you want more tone, damp the batter head. In any event, try and get the beater to hit the exact centre of the head, and if you do cut a hole in the reso, it shouldn't be bigger than 15% of the total head size, otherwise the reso may as well not be there at all.. Then it's all down to tuning, drum size and type of wood. At least, that's what I think!! Experiment - and have FUN!
