Smile Re: Could I use timpanis instead of a drumset??

Hi Jericho,

I have been looking at your post for a while and been thinking!...... (sort-of hurts)

The timpanis while having a big volume sound, are also melodious (some of them can be tuned to a tone) but also have a long decay. They are very hard to mix-in with a drumset. That is also the reason that in orchestras the timpany players are dedicated to just this(those)instrument(s), so that they can quickly muffle the decay by putting both hands on the heads.

I think you would be better of by using timbales, you can have a look at them at Music Friends, they come in quite a big range.
They are basically for Latin music, but I have used them for special effects and they are great to have anyway. Also they are sort of affordable, timpanis being really expensive.

I hope that this helps you a bit.

Cheers and happy drumming,

Harry
