Actually, we are lucky enough to have a bassist whose girlfriend is quite talented with that shtuff. I know what you mean about it being a pain though. I frustratingly designed our first 3-4 drafts before she took over. She's a god-send.
Thanks for the advice Chez. We are actually approaching the producing side with the idea of knowing what we want, and ask for the opinions of the engineer. If he's really good at getting a certain sound, that will sound better than him forcing something else. You know? I used to engineer in college and found it easier when bands said, "We would like it to sound similar to this, but not exactly, what do you think?" That way I could give them a few options and examples. Both sides win and no one is there to push anybody around and then take your money for it. Hah. And we are recording and editing with my old engineering professor, who has some great advice. So we are "producing ourselves." Kinda. But we won't stand for assholes! Fight the power!
