Re: Any Tips For Someone who is starting CHEZM I have been playing for over 40 years I now play gigs and until recently gave lessons I had to stop for a while because of a torn rotator cuff in my shoulder I am going in for surgery within a week, if you or anyone wants some good advice what I did and what I always tell my students is this, Get some old Jazz standards records slow to medium tempo slow to start and listen to the music and listen to the drums, keep the beat in your mind forget a metronome for now I never used one and start playing if you can play a slow song with brushes on your snare drum only thats good to slow to begin with then medium tempo you may not like what your playing but it will help you slow at first and this type of music will help with your timing because it's pretty steady and as a beginner that's what you need I did this at the start and it worked and never used a metronome playing rock has fill-ins and different patterns and as a beginner you need to start without the fill-ins and breaks try this and GOOD LUCK SLINGERLAND |
