I would have to disagree buddy, both open handed playing and right hand playing have been useful to me. Learning many techniques can be very beneficial down the road. For instance some fills I play in songs are much easier to play coming from open hand player rather than closed. It's good just to learn both to be safe. This really goes with anything else in drumming too such as learning different styles of playing. Stuff I play in jazz band at school have influenced fills I play in rock in metal.
