Tama makes quality drums. You could check out the Tama Superstar. Roughly speaking, they're a thousand less than the Starclassic Bubinga, maybe more. Go to Musician's Friend online and check them out for price.
I seem to recall Mapex winning some recognition lately, but I can't remember for what.
Most drums are well made these days. You've got to find drums in your price range and play them. What sounds and feels good? If you don't notice a difference, why buy the more expensive set?
