just do it however it feels best and work with it. some stuff feels really wrong when you first learn it, but after you practice it and get it down it feels like any other way would be wrong, it becomes second nature and feels good.
as for that last pattern you tried, sounds fine as long as its comfortable and you can play the fill that way.
