Jolfy it sounds like you are right dominant, that is how I felt first. I said oh damn, I do have a left hand. It is hard to play with the left leading a fill, but at least from my minimal experience at open-handed, is feels like the appropriate way to fill in order to land 1 on the hi-hat, it just takes practice
