Bitter, ale and stout are stored at only a little under room temperature. Beers, lagers, alcopops etc are all served cold, just like in the states!
You lose flavour the colder food or drink is because taste relies so heavily on smell, for which you need some kind of vapour which the alcohol provides. If alcohol is cold, it smells of nothing but once it warms, it's quite pungent. Bitters, ales and stouts are kept at a higher temperature than beers/lagers for the particularly strong flavours which few countries outside the UK appreciate.
