It certainly gives some exposure, I've had many comments from people I would never have met including musicians I admire. It's quite good for hunting out people with similar obscure tastes, or even the makers of obscure music you know and love.
I do think it's also kind of meaningless, it's easy to get anyone to be your "friend", in the myspace sense of the word. I have Snoop Dogg as a friend but there's no way he's even anything to do with his myspace page.
Eventually everyone in the world will be on myspace and have 5,999,999,999 friends. Then we'll all turn our computers off and go to the park.
