You may be hitting them too hard. NO worries, learning to 'be kind and/or gentle' to your set takes time and practice, as you know full well by now. Perhaps try hitting your toms a little more lightly, they will produce sound in the same way, just know that to get lots of colume from your drums (toms) you need to them hard so much as increase your 'striking distance'. I'm not sure how to say this any better. I don't know if this will establish any credibility in your mind buy hey, 8 and 1/2 years playing and I've broken 3 drumheads. Learning to relax is the best thing for you and it cause or builds endurance also such that you will able to play faster, longer! good luck, I hope it goes well for you!
