When your teacher tells you to play harder, he doesn't mean to try and put dents in your heads. What he probaly means is that you need to be more aggressive. Attack those notes, accent them if you have to. Let your drum sticks bounce and let the head resonate to the fullest to produce the sharpest and cleanest sound possible.

I think that your drum instructor used the wrong choice of words in that case. A lot of times when people play "harder" they tend to drag and play heavy. That's never a good thing in percussion.
