I totally agree. You can't assume that every venue will have a suitable floor for a drumkit, even thought they damn well should! I've turned up to many gigs to find a highly polished wood floor and no rug. At one show my bass drum ended up literally out of reach, I called over one of the techs while I was playing and he just couldn't understand what the problem was. The fact that I was stretching my leg to get to the pedal and couldn't even reach it then should have given him a clue! Fool.

I always carry a rug now. Also - here's a tip - carry a length of fairly heavy guage chain that's long enough to attach to both your bass drum spurs and thread through the legs of your stool. That way, the bass drum can't move even if it wants to.
