| the nearer to square sizes are louder and deeper. long toms might produce a different 'perceived' depth but... loud is in square.
I like to play as flat as physical possible. In that I mean the drums are a table top so the snare is the focal point and the toms are as almost flat as the snare. of course not everyone likes this, but tried and tested speed research shows, the less distance you have to move the more energy you conserve.
I am pedantic though, and 1mm is a lot
