Sabian Xs20 cymbals...thoughts?

I'm looking to replace a crash cymbal soon. It's cracked, but still playable and the crack hasn't diminished the sound yet, but I'm in a race against time.

I'm a little short of cash right now, so I'm in the unfortunate position of cymbal shopping on a budget. I'd like to get something heavy and large, around 18+". (Sabian AAX Xplosion 19" would be ideal). I've been looking at the Sabian Xs20 series of cymbals. I understand that they are essentially refurbished cymbals, using the B20 alloy. Has anyone here had any experience with these cymbals? None of the music stores in my area (Chattanooga, TN) carry them, so in order to hear one, I'll probably have to drive to the Marietta, GA Guitar Center, about 90 miles away. That's quite a drive to realize that they're all crap. :-)

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

You are a bit misinformed, sir. Sabian Xs20 cymbals are made of B20 alloy, yes, however, they are not refurbished cymbals. The Sabian refurbished cymbals you are thinking of are known as Sabian SR2 cymbals. These cymbals are made of B20 as are the Xs20 cymbals, but when you purchase one you may be getting an AAX, HHX, Xs20, or any other B20 line that Sabian carries.

I have not heard any SR2 cymbals yet. None of the stores near me carry them either, but I have heard Xs20 cymbals. I have 14" hats, 16" crash, and 20" ride Xs20 medium thin cymbals. I absolutely LOVE the crash, the hats are awesome, and the ride... well the ride sounds great as well, but the bell is very small.

I would recommend finding some SR2 cymbals and comparing them with the Xs20's. The Xs20's won't sound like crap, they are awesome. I think the SR2's will probably sound great, too, since they are B20. Go for it, or try another brand that is easily available.

Hope this helps, happy drumming

Thanks for the reply, and it appears that I was misinformed. The way that you describe the SR2 is what I thought that the Xs20 was.

Knowing what I now know, it appears that the Xs20 is the way to go, unless I can find somewhere that has the SR2 so I can demo them. Really, I just need something to get me by until I can afford to get an AAX or HHX.

It seems that the SR2 cymbals are a little rare, and I would imagine so as they are limited to refurbished product, but I've only found a few places that sell them online...and as a rule, I never buy a cymbal without hearing it in person, so that's out. I'll probably call the Marietta GC and see if they carry the SR2 and/or Xs20 and plan a day trip.

Thanks again for the info!

Sounds like a plan! Let me know how the SR2's sound if you end up trying them.

XS20's sound very simmilar to the AA series. The reason is because they have the same lathing pattern, but are cheap because they are not hammered.

SR2s might be special orders?
