Question What would you do?

Christmas has come, which means MONEY! Sorry for the caps, I'm just so excited. Between my Birthday and Christmas money, and year savings, I have about $650. I'm really dying for new cymbals. Yet, I'm faced with a decision. Should I buy an A Custom or A *regular* Pack or should I buy each cymbal one by one as I accumulate the mula. The A's and A customs seem like a great deal, but I don't want to spend all my money on the pack and find out I should've waited. If I were to buy cymbals individually, I would start with hi-hats and a ride. I think my B8 crashes can wait to be replaced. So what option would you take and why? Any suggestions for hats and a ride would be helpful. I'm thinking something with a nice finish, not too brilliant, but one that has either fine or minimal lathing. I'm not a huge fan of the way my B8's look, or sound.

Thanks All. Happy Holidays and Have a great New Year

Re: What would you do?

I would avoid the cymbal packs and go to the local drum shops and try before I buy.

Let your ears be the judge. Then go online to see if you can get them at a lower price.

I heard cymbals only was a "good" sight.

Re: What would you do?

Hey Everyone,

So I'm taking your advice and going to GC hopefully this week, as long as I finish homework. Anyway, I made a list of hi-hats that interest me and I'm going to try as many of them out when I'm there. I looked at cymbals only, but am still weary of online sound sampling. I've seen so many videos online of the same cymbals and they all sound different. I like the memphis drum shop videos, but there are still the slightest discrepancies between pairs.

On my list:

13" A Mastersound -possibly the customs
13" AAX Fast Hats
13" Byzance Jazz Thin
13" Meinl Fast Hat Brilliant
14" Paiste Alpha Rock
13" New Beat
13" Meinl Byzance Medium
13" AAX Studio
13" Meinl Soundcaster custom

Any experience with these? Any durability issues? Depending on what I get (I may completely stray from this list and get some kind of K Custom pair), I will have to decide between a Pork Pie Throne or new ride. Should be a fun trip to Guitar Center!

Thanks and Happy New Year

I've got a feeling that you'll like the New Beat.

But they are pricey and worth it.

I've heard a lot of good things about the new beats. In comparison to some others though, they aren't that bad price wise. The K Hybrid I was looking at ran another hundred, and I am feeling pretty good about these. Any experience with the quick beats as well. I've heard that they suit a different style of music, a little lighter. But I've also heard they have a more defined chick when closed.

Re: What would you do?

Listening to cymbals in a shop and then going online to buy them is no guarantee they will sound the same, even if you have to pay a little more, give your local drum shop the business, they will appreciate it and you will also develop a relationship with them for future customer service, and future purchases, and they can probably order you anything you want, times are tough and we should be supporting our local guys!
