Broken Cymbal

You know that feeling when your playing, all happy in your work, then u spot something on your cymbal.. is it a hair?.. hit the cymbal, but it doesnt move.. wait, noooooo Its a Crack!!!
Ahhh hate it.

My question.
Ive spent alot of time working on technique but I do suffer from heavy playing especially live. The crack ive just found, is not on the edge of the cymbal but along the ridge in the middle area. It(was) a Zildjian Zcustom 17" crash. I think ive had it for about 2 and half years I play on it an average an hour a day.

1.has this broken before its time or does that sound about right?
2.does anybody have this cymbal?
3.do i need to go back to the drawing board techniquewise?

cheers!

Re: Broken Cymbal

(1) I think it broke before it's time. Zildjians should not break too easy.
(2) I don't have that one; but I do have Zildjian A-Custom 16" Crash.
(3) I never went in much about "technique" I believe more in what your style is? What ever your style is and it works for you....it is you; why try to change, your comfortable and having fun....thats it!
Don't let the confusion of technique hinder your playing! Be yourself!

Zildjian are one company that offer a life time guarantee..so get in touch and tell them they will either fix the cymbal, replace it or offer advice if its a technique issue to correct it and prevent damage to other cymbals...it could be a flaw in the metal a crack caused in manufacture that your pounding has exposed....fracture cold-shot or poor mixture of metal lack of one element........so my advice get in touch with Zildjian, make some inquires and ask for an explanation.....they are meant to be played not stuck on a wall to be looked at.....you may have to send your cymbal to them.....all the best it will be out of Warranty that runs for two years the cymbal type you have is cast Bronze so possible impurity issues blow holes ,cracks caused in the making process are more likely than say a pressed sheet metal cymbal so complain dude............

Write a letter to the complaints department. Take a photo of the cymbal and a close up of the crack if possible. They will then write back telling you where to send the cymbal. Explain that the cymbal is out of warranty but you have issues with the quality and beleive that there is a flaw or fault in the cymbal and could they please examin it for detection of a manufacturing fault in the casting process. They will have the batch number of your cymbal and will be able to trace the cymbal through each process of control......good luck dude nothing ventured nothing gained you may get a replacement if it is proven to be a fault so keep them crossed and be patient ....

although the warranty say's two years bro that means jack ****! its just a warranty and like cars give 5 years....that is not the life of the cymbal...... thats not a gurantee of Quality..... quality failure even outside that 2 year marjin is unaceptable under the trades discription act 1979. if that's 1 or 61 years old. If the fault is in the manufacture of the said cymbal you must demand your rite to have the cymbal tested for Failure..........there ya go....people think but the warranty is up it means ****....dude you still have rights of quality........

Re: Broken Cymbal

How to Replace a Zildjian Cymbal under a Lifetime Warranty

Zildjian Cymbals have warranties against manufacturers defects.
The Zildjian corporation is an international cymbal company and the world's oldest active drum cymbal producer. Their cymbals are made of an amalgamation of metals and produced on a lathe. Zildjian offers warranties with every purchase as long as the cymbals were not put to unnecessary abuse. An extended warranty can be purchased for the cymbals from major music stores, which can make the cymbal replaceable for its entire life.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

things you'll need:
Receipt of purchase
Flat shipping box
Packaging
Tape
1
Inspect the break in the cymbal for signs that the break may be caused by abuse. Search the middle hole of the cymbal for signs that the cymbal was mounted without a protective sleeve, such as sunburst cracking from the hole. The warranty is void if the cymbal shows cracks or other damage from abuse. Use a piece of tape to signify where the damage is on the cymbal by placing a small strip next to the crack or break.

2
Call the Zildjian company at 781-871-2200 and request a return authorization number from the operator. Place the cymbal in a flat shipping box and stuff the packaging around it so that the cymbal does not receive further damage. Include in the box a note of how the damage happened, a return mailing address, contact phone number and a photocopy of the original receipt of sale with the return authorization number written on it.

3
Write the address of the Zildjian warehouse clearly on both the box and the attached shipping label:

Avedis Zildjian Company

(write the Return Authorization number here)

22 Longwater Drive

Norwell, MA 02061

USA

Ship the box using the post office or a private shipping company such as UPS.

4
For extended warranty coverage from an independent music store, simply bring the cymbal and the original receipt (with both cymbal and warranty information) to the store and show the cymbal to a clerk. Explain the damage, and receive a replacement.
