Exclamation Crash/Ride question

Hey so I have a Zildjian ZBT Crash/Ride 18 in (yeah I know its crap but its all I can afford) My question is, How can I get it to sound more like a ride? I dont have a designated ride and it sounds to much like a sustaining crash, any tips would be appreciated (Besides telling me to get a new one)

Re: Crash/Ride question

Well you can't really modify a cymbal. You can tune drums, obviously, to make them sound different, but cymbals are pretty much set in stone (or metal ).

Cymbals mature sonically (I have heard), with age. Some people swear by never cleaning a cymbal because the dirty cymbal has a better sound. I have never cleaned my cymbals and I dunno if I ever will, unless I get another set of them and can experiment.

The only other reason I can think of that would cause a cymbal to change sound is a crack or warp. You don't want to do purposefully hurt your cymbal, of course, but maybe you could try taping a tissue to it and just draping it over the side. This might make it less sustainful, but it might also make it sound worse.

Re: Crash/Ride question

I've had that cymbal with my old Ludwig kit. It depends on how and where you hit it. Towards the middle = Ride, the edge=Crash.

There is no way you can actually get two different sounds from it. That's why it's called a Crash/Ride. When you tap it, you get more of a ride sound. When you hit it hard, it produces more of a crash sound.

Re: Crash/Ride question

I'd try sticking some gaffer tapes around the underside and see if that givers you what you want, but ultimately you're gonna have to take the plunge and buy a new cymbal. Be sure to try first and if you're looking for intermediate, I'd reccomend Paiste or UFIP. Sabian and Zildjian just go too far with their cheapness.

Re: Crash/Ride question

My 19" crash sounds great but it had to much sustain and ring so i put 4 pieces of duct tape on the bottom side in equal places and it helped alot, maybe that would help you too.

dude its mainly down to technique and experience....Position ....first get it down low ideal a ride needs to be at a comfy hight so your power can be controled light and shade dude so you can target the cymbal easy..sometimes i see drummers they got all the cymbals back or dead level...just for show.all you do is crack cymbals like that they sound great for about three weeks....a cymbal should be at eye level or below and accessible to all edges including the bell. The angle should be cymbal slightly tilted towards you so its easy to grab for a stab to crash or ride...Dude a good drummer can ride a 10" splash. The cymbal you have is advertised as a ride/crash. I like great dirty rides like my Zildjian Earth ride. Maybe you need a heavy cymbal to compliment it...i have a medium 20" Zildjian i love freaking people out because its great for ceshendo's and crashing.....The other thing is a good curvature on the cymbal dictates how good a ride can be with sustain I notice your cymbal tends to be a bit on the flat side very little under curve so maybe its the overtone or lack of that is throwing you.......and get some paiste in there otherwise you become a gong merchant........
