Bad Hi Hat Noise

Hello:
My problem: when I release the pedal on my hi hat, it makes this terrible, unmusical, honking noise. I'm using decent cymbals (Zildjian 14" recording) and a decent stand (Tama, forget the model #/name). I've tried adjusting the cymbal tilt, and messing with the stand adjustments, but the problem remains.
Any suggestions would be gratefully entertained.
Thx

Welcome to DSC benjamo.

Either you have a bent internal rod within the hihat or it's something as simple as lubricating the rod. Try using a little WD-40 by spraying it at the top of your hihat internat rod untill it drips down to the bottom. Place some paper towels at the bottom to catch the excess oil. Then wipe off any excess oil along the hihat.

I hope this works for you. Let us know the out come.

When was the last time you did maintenace on your drum kit.?

I've found that lots of drummers just play their kit until they break down.

Peiodic drum maintenance whether once or twice a year will make your kit last longer. After all, it's an investment. Just like car that needs a lube job periodically.

Good Luck and keep on drumming.

Re: Bad Hi Hat Noise

As well as the good advice from Tainojim , u cud try , u may already do this so forgive me if Im teaching granny to suck eggs ! . when setting up your hi hat , once you have it braced and secure on the floor , try to keep sat on your throne while placing and adjusting your hats , the reason is that if you do it stood up , the moment you sit down you may have already tightened the top hat and you spin the hat to the position you want it but in doing so you are spinning the link rod as well .

Has it always made a noise ? , if not mess about with it a little , its good to understand how everything works .

Good luck .
