Cool Rock Ride

Hi Guys!

My 16 year old will be the drummer for an established rock band ( not heavy metal). He has a pretty good collection of cymbals for Jazz ( Zildjian K Constantinople 21" Big Band Ride, Sabian AAX 21" Raw Bell Dry Ride, Zildjian A Armand 19" Beautiful Baby Ride, K Custom 20" Session Ride, along with different crashes like K Customs, Sabian AAX's, etc.) I just bought him a Sabian AAX 19" X Plosion Fast Crash. Are there particularly good ride cymbals for non heavy metal rock? The Sabian AAX Raw Bell Dry Ride is sweet but I wonder if there are better rides for this genre? Also he has 14" K Cutom High Hats. I'm thinking New Beats or Quick Beats. What do people favor? Thanks in advance. Brian

Re: Rock Ride

Wow, he's got a nice collection of cymbals. Well done Dad!

I've always had luck with my Jack Dejhonnette (sp?) signature Sabian ride. It's not lathed and it's a dark metal beast. It's different than other cymbals because it cuts through the band with just a bright, clear stick sound.

It's ideal to have more than one ride for different song requirements so I'd experiment with lathed/unlathed cymbals. I've always wanted to try a flat ride with no bell and a combiination of a smaller one layered on top of a larger one. But I don't have the cash right now. Wish I was 16 again with a generous dad!

Re: Rock Ride

Thanks for the advice. I ended up getting him a Sabian AAX 19' X Plosion fast crash and a 16" sabian AAX X Plosion crash. I was lucky enough on EBAY to get some vintage Zildjian 14" New Beat high hats and a vintage Zildjian 22" Rock Ride. I think I am done. Hopefully this will help to keep him from putting me in the Nursing Home later in life. Thanks Again, Brian

Re: Rock Ride

For hard rock. I use a Sabian Rock Ride. It's a 22 inch. I bought it in 1985 sometime. Lots of ping, a good bell, and you can still build up some wash with the shoulder of the stick without completely losing definition when using the tip.

The Zildjian version is basically identical.

I saw a Z3 one with a big bell recently that really impressed me.

I prefer medium weight crash cymbals myself. I have an 18" Paiste 2002 crash (not the one they call medium, which is actually a little heavier than medium), a 17" Zildjian Z3 medium crash and an 18" A. Zildjian medium crash.
