If you are buying used---you are looking for cracks or other damage, and as far as buying new the only real issue is do you like the sound. I was told by a drummer friend when I first started building my kit to buy a pre-selected set to start with, and add or replace individual cymbals over time. I currently have Zildjian 14" hats, 16" crash, 20" ride, 18"china, and a sabian 18" crash/ride. I bought the sabian new to upgrade the cheap ones that came with the set, then got a great deal on the zildjians used. One thing to keep in mind is that cymbals will sound different at the music store than they will in your living room!

Make sure they are round and that they have a hole in the center..........ahem.
It's the sound you are after and how well they complement each other. The finish may be a concern.Older cymbals used to tarnish and required polishing. But now, cymbals are coated with magic fairy dust or something, so that those polishing days are over. My oldest cymbal is a Super Zyn 20 inch medium crash, that I brought back from the dead a couple of years ago. I polished it until it was as good as it was going to get, then I applied clear high gloss polyurethane. With lots of use, the cymbal still looks as good as when I refinished it. I clean all my cymbals now with just glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth.
I seem to have gone far-afield here, but the drum spirit so directed me for some reason.
So.....find the best deal and the best sound for the money and if they are used and abused, you can resurrect them so they look new again. Happy hunting.

I agree to both hippy chip and orionsbelt77! Check for damages if buying used. It really depends on your music style and your taste. Good Luck
