Anybody like these as much as I do? The sound is very articulate and precise. I dont have one myself, but Ive been drooling over an old K model online.... So what are your thoughts on em'?

Is that a specific Zildjian model? Or do you mean cymbals that are flat in general?

Every company usually has a flat ride model. Its generally a ride with no bell. Zildjian has a couple flat ride models out....

I've never really played a flat ride, but that's something I'm hoping to rectify when my bank balance allows it.

I do like the sound, the ones I've heard have really clear definition and light, articulate stick response but with a decent wash going on too. As I'm sure some of you can predict, I like the sound of some of the Bosphorus and Istanbul models, the wash is just the right side of dark when mixed with the brighter ping and the overtones are quite musical without being too prominent.

I've not heard a flat K but I bet they sound awesome, Ks are my favourite Zildjian cymbals overall.

Is the Zildjian Ping ride a flat ride? I've heard good things... any thoughts on it compared to the flat rides?

No, the Zildjian ping ride is just a regular ride. I believe flat rides have less wash than regular rides, although im not sure. Heres a picture of one...
They arent really "flat", they're just called that because they lack a bell.

My second drum kit came with a zildjian flat ride. It sounded great, but I already had a ride with a bell and with money being tight I traded it in on an "18 crash.

Is the sound that much different or better to justify going without a bell?

Yeah, it's just different, "better" is a matter of opinion.

Losing the bell changes the overall response of a cymbal, the spread between the attack of the stick and the resulting wash can be dramatically altered. As with everything in this game though, one flat ride can sound pretty different to others - the rest of the physical characteristics all make a difference. It goes the other way too with those rides with enormous bells. I played one of those a few years ago (can't remember which brand) but wasn't too impressed.

I think it's great to have such a range of stuff to play around with, even with tiny differences. Obviously not all new designs are good - there's a lot of simple gimmicks floating around but they have no staying power anyway.
