The K addiction rages on....

Well, It all started with my flat ride. Amazing cymbal. Good deal. Just awesome.

Then, the 17in K custom dark crash joined the family, another awesome cymbal, being one of the best crashes I've played.

And now, Its about to be joined by a third K. A K custom 18in session crash. It cost a pretty penny, and I bought it online, (not after hearing a soundfile though) and Im eagerly awaiting it.

Im addicted. I love my K's! Do we have any other K fans in the house?

Personally, I like the sound of the Zildjian A's better as they're brighter and more vibrant. It also doesn't hurt that they cost much less.

But K's are great cymbals and I wouldn't mind having them in my collection as well. How many do you plan on getting?

I think this might be it for K's...for now. Maybe a K custom china...

I tend to stay away from A's. Although they sound good, they're one-dimesional. I like unique cymbals. The K's are full and complex. I love em'

What do you mean when you say the cymbals are multidimensional? Do you mean that they're versatile for different styles of playing or that they're all slightly different from cymbal to cymbal?

Its hard to explain really (Dravenhurst, help me out!) But theres something that the random machine hammering (Zildjian says hand hammering...no hands involved though) adds that just blows away the A's. The K's just sound full. By multidimensional I mean this: When you hit a K, you get the initial attack, then the overtones, and it fades out. Alot happens, and the hammering style adds a complexity to the cymbal.

With A's, you have a uniform hammering, so you get a uniform sound you know? But because K's have that random hammering, it adds alot to the cymbal. Hence, multidimensional sound.

Oh okay, thanks for clearing that up for me.

That's actually got me pretty interested into the K line. Before I used to think that they were only for jazz and darker kinds of music. Is that really not the case?

K's can be used for alot of stuf other than Jazz. I wouldnt join a death metal group and start bashing them though, cause they arent as loud as rock cymbals. They work well in alot of situations. Not all K's are dark either, thats just one of their lines.

A's are really nice cymbals but I find they lack character a little. K's are definitely more complex, I guess it's something to do with the balance of the Attack, wash, decay and the tones involved. It's hard to describe but K's have that beautiful wash that seems to linger and stamp their mark over what you play - at loud volumes they can swell like a tidal-wave and back off, at lower volumes the wash still hangs around and the attack has a little bit of "push" so you feel like you're awakening something. Oh, and I would certainly use K's in any musical setting, death metal included - there are some heavy K's out there, I crash the living hell out of my K ride and it sounds great. More dynamics in metal!

I must say though, I'm finding that my K ride isn't ageing all that well. It seems to be choking up a bit whereas similar sounding Istanbul or Bosphorus cymbals sink gently into old age and really open up. I think it's Istanbul all the way for me from now on, you just can't go wrong.

I just got my session crash today, and it sounds awesome. The thing has a bell on it like a ride, I'll put up a pic soon. First, I gotta play the hell out of it.
