Cymbal Purchase Help

Hi I've been drumming for about 4 years now on an electric DTXpressII that I got for my birthday a while back. I was looking to make the jump to an acoustic set and was trying to decide on what cymbals to pick up. I've been researching this for quite a while now and am looking mainly at the Zildjian series. I play mainly a lighter part of rock, kinda funky, lil' jazzy, so not exactly specified to one genre but I tend to stay away from the harder metal music out there. I've been thinking about the Custom A series and in fact picked up a pair of 14" Custom A hats just to get myself started. I'm not too sure how much I like them, and am thinking of maybe returning for Zildjian A (either quickbeat or newbeat, I can't remember which one I played) hats.

The problem I'm worried about is the fact that I've been used to hear an electric set all these years, so I'm not too used to the acoustic sets and maybe at this point no set of hats will exactly please my hearing?

And then for crash cymbals I'm not too sure whether Custom A, A, or K would be a good choice. I've heard K's aren't bad, but I'm worried it'll be a lil' too hard for my liking. I guess it's hard to recommend one over the other, but if people know of any strengths and weaknesses of the sets I would greatly appreciate the info.

One last thing! I've read that your hats, crash, and ride should all compliment each other pretty well, so does that mean if i go with an A hat that I should stay away from K rides and crashes?

Any information and help is greatly appreciated! I'm overwhelmed with a wealth of choices, haha.

Alright, Let me see if I can answer a few of your questions.

The A custom line is very versatile. I think you'd be happy with those as they are an all around type cymbal. They can handle soft stuff, all the way up to hard rock. Then again, K's are made for jazzy, light rock styles, so check those out too. I have a whole set of K's, and they're amazing.
About the cymbal blending/complementing, it would be good to listen to some soundfiles, and get an idea of the sound you like. If you have a good music store near you, go in and just test out cymbals. Most modern cymbals blend very weill with each other, expecially if they are made within the same companies product lines. Zildjian A's probably blend well with lots of other lines. Its good to have them both side by side though.
Hope that helped! And Welcome to the forums!

Just Take you're time in the store. Try out everything and make sure you're going to be happy with it.

Start with a pair of hats you like, then take to store to match other cymbals to it. There doesn't have to be much art to it, just set them both up as would on your kit and make sure they sound good together. Don't make the mistake of thinking you hats will sound the same as the ones in the store. All cymbals sound different.

You want more help advice, I suggest you check out http://home.earthlink.net/~prof.sound/ this site has tonnes of info about buying cymbals and drums. Of course you can always keep bugging the lot of us for info too.

Good luck.

Let your ears guide you. All brands have many series of cymbals to choose from. Try to have a budget in mind; then check out the series of various makers that fit your budget. It may take alittle time but it all boils down to what you can afford and what pleases you sonically Good Luck!

Just as an update, but more of an example for others who are in the same type of situation I was in, I ended up going Sabian. Zildjian didn't have the sound I was looking for, and now I'm actually working with a variety of sabian cymbals from HandHammered to AAX and AA. This just goes to show, always go and try out what you think you'll want, cause you might end up having the exact opposite opinion once you actually hear it. Expect to spend lots of time finding something that fits what you like, but the time spent is well worth it.

I have paiste 2002 14" hats for about 4 years and they have never failed me and are still the best hats i think out there. I just prefer paiste over other brands.
