Solar for beginners

Well, I'm only a beginner myself, and I have got me some of Sabian's Solar series brass cymbals...

I know, because they're not bronze, they aren't that good; but they are extremely cheap.

If you look at Sabian's price catalogue, you can see just how cheap they really are.

But I have got 14"hats, 16" crash and a 20" ride. They are fairly musical; despite their price; and I've had friends (who own AAX series) say that the ride is pretty sweet. I agree really, the ride does have a nice sounds to it, and a piercing bell sound.

I'm thinking of expanding on my set up with Solar, as I have little money.

If you were using Solar when you started; tell me what you think...

I did not have solar but MEINL brass which I replaced since then. Now there's only left Sabian B8 on my kit that need to be replace.

My best advice is keep your money, save and get yourself some nice pro cymbals whatever it from local ads or ebay. You can make crappy kit sound good with good heads & tuning but you can't never make crappy cymbal sound good. What I have done is upgrade my cymbals one at the time.

Yeah, that is a good point... I do think that Solar sound excellent for brass though; and the range is fairly diverse for beginners:

10 and 12 splashes
14 16 and 18 crash
20 ride
16 18 and 20 china
14 and 13 hi hats.

but... I wouldn't mind some Zildjian ZXT; or some Sabian AAX.

I always liked the look of the ZXT Trashformer...

You guys are gonna go tone deaf with trash can lids. Are you just kids? You can get good cymbals if you want to. I have Paiste Signatures but it took awhile. I have a solar 14" I found on the highway and it's the ****tiest thing I ever heard! It should be a crime to sell this junk in the shape of a cymbal.

I'm using a 16" Fast Crash I got from a guy that has a crash/hole in the cymbal. It still works and I don't cars what it looks like. Still sounds good. $50.00 and I'm happy. To be honest, all my Sig's have a flaw. That's how was able to get them. Well, except for the 14" heavy Sound Edge hats.

Yeah, but I'm only a student, so I have NO money... I save whatever I have for this sorta stuff...

and these cymbals came with my kit anywhos...

and as mind_drummer said, I should save it up and get some better ones...hopefully bronze...

had a look on Sabian's site last night and found that the B8Pro series sounds excellent for cheap cymbals...especially the china splash and 18" China...

If I was teaching, I would have a set of Signatures just so I wouldn't be shaking at the end of the lesson. I'd have to smoke crack to calm down.

Get the best cymbals you can as fast as possible. Take advantage of the used cymbal market. cymbalcellar.com is a goldmine for pro quality used stuff. Ebay is also verrrry nice. Trust me, you'll want to ditch those solars ASAP! Its better to have one good cymbal than 5 solars anyday.
