Well I say for cymbals... 2 chinas(1 large, 1 small), splash, 1-2 crashes, 1 ride, 1 or 2 hats depending on size of set and music. Then mayeb a couple other effect cymbals for fun lol.

It's under P in the dictionary old man

Do not have teenagers without a copy

In my country we have a site for seliing and buying similar to EBay. Now i have a heap of cymbals, but trouble is some don't get used as often as they should, so at times you have to be a bit ruthless and realistic and let some go.
After years of playing and ecperimenting you tend to collect a few cymbals as a drummer. There is nothing wrong with what i have, just process of elimination gets you to your own sound.

I sold today two great cymbals, a 17" 2002 Paiste med crash and a 14" Paiste Signature full crash today. The money from the sales will go toward a set of signature hi hats, i'm toying with sound edge. So end result is turning excess things into useful things. My current hihats 2002's, then become a practice set or for that gig i need them on. I also have the option to use the 2002 top and sig bottom for a different sound.

Currently in my regular set up i am using hihats, two crashes and a ride. I have a splash and a china for when i need them, and a variety of different crashes from dark to bright to chop and change with the above or add in if i want to hide myself and be noisy.
I am human and like all drummers, love hitting things, especially musical cymbals but i have learnt less is more at times. By keeping the cymbals down on a gig, i do play better, less busy, and more focused.

I think the next addition to the setup will be either remote or just closed alternate hihat.Way over like by the ride somewhere.I little set of 12's or even 10's would sizzle nicely while working a lefthand pattern with the main hats and snare.

really i think its all about the style(s) you play, ambition, and personal preference. I own about ten cymbals (2 hi-hats, 3 crashes, 2 splashes, a crash ride and a china). I usually find myself playing rock, and the cymbal setup works for me. sometimes i feel like scaling down my setup and using only about 5 or 6 cymbals, and sometimes i wish i had another cymbal or two. but i donno, i guess its all about what you feel and how much $$ you've got

Re: How many is too many?

I have 4 cymbals myself. I play alot of Jazz which doesn't require many cymbals

1. 17" A zildjian medium crash. (now main Crash)
2. 20" K custom Dark ride ( has crash effects)
3. 16" K custom Dark Crash( right side crash)
4. 13" a zildjian Mastersound Hihats.

but I'm getting New Beat hihats because they are darker and more mellow.

Re: How many is too many?

So now I have 4 cymbals...technically 5.
14in. xs20 rock hats, wish they were brighter when closed, but loosened a bit they sounds great sliding against eachother
16in. xs20 rock crash, love the shimmer/brightness from it when you hit that guy right
20in. xs20 rock ride, ringy...and loud...way to loud for jazz and not the sound I'd prefer but it gets that job done and feels great crashing
14in. zxt trashformer, love the sound of this cymbal, but it is thin, just gotta hit it right(glance off the bends seems to be the best way I know off)
Hopefully will be getting an 18in. meinl byzance china soon. And maybe another crash.

1 10" Zildjian A Splash
1 10" Stagg Dragon Splash

Re: How many is too many?

14in hi-hats
16in Sabian B8 Pro Crash
10in Sabian B8 Splash
12in Sabian B8 Pro China Splash
14in Zildjan ZXT China
18in Zildjan ZBT Crash/Ride w/ rivets
18in Paiste PST Crash/Ride

That makes seven. I'm waiting on a cymbal stacker, then I'll have more.
