14 power hats, 20 power ride, 18 china all paiste alpha.
12 splash- 602
16 and 18 crashes- 802
22 china- 2002

That makes seven. I'd like to add another splash and a crash that goes between the 16 and 18.

Depends on the gig need. I often use hi hats, ride and one crash which is plenty, these are general purpose not too dark, bright or loud. I can use hats and ride as crashes if needed. Sometimes less is more, if i have too many set up i have to watch i don't overplay and keep things musical and in context with the song (hard for a drummer with toys).
It is handy to have a second crash to the left, and then there are the effects china, splash etc which embellish to add. If your music calls for them and are needed as they are a main feature of a song, i would use them.
Cymbals are amazing instruments in themselves and a lot of fun, but be warned Cymbalitis can be expensive.

I have an average of 7 cymbals on my set at a time. I eventually want to have just a wall of cymbals in front of me haha.

I think that Neil Peart has about as much brass as one could one could possibly have a use for. Have you seen Mike Portnoys or Terry Bozzios kits recently? Mein gott! At that point I start to feel sorry for the drum tech guys. I currently have five cymbols: (six if you count BOTH the hi hats) AAX Metal hi hats, 16" AA medium crash, 19" AA Metal-X crash, 12" HH Mini china, And an AA Raw bell dry ride. Still need A china (I am in love with the 19" Neil peart) And a splash or two.

You can never OWN too many cymbals. But, my preference is hi-hats, two crashes, and two rides on my kit.

i have played with 14 cymbals, not counting the 3 sets of high hats. i actually use just about every one is most of my bands music. i've actually downsized from 22, some were getting crappy and its hard to gig with that many.

Well the point would be if you wanted more sounds. If you are happy with the possibilities that 2 crashes supplies you, great.I need more of a selection of sounds.A good example is any Rage Against the Machine cd.Very typical and almost monotonous drumming is accentuated by the use of like 1 crash ,maybe 2 if you are lucky. It is a use of preference not so much neccessity. The thread asks 'How many is too many" are you saying that hats,2 crashes,a ride and a splash is the limit for you?I would need at least a china added to that.
