That's a nice idea. I had a Roktagon when I was a kid. My mom made me give it a way though when it bit me. I'm glad to see someone else have the b*lls to jump into this cymbal warping game. Good luck. By all means, keep the unwashed among us informed if you will.

I remember reading about this guy some time ago, he'll take in trashed cymbals and do a total rehammering job. Not sent him anything myself (yet) but have read a lot of good things. I've got an old cracked 17" Sabian HH crash which I'm thinking of sending, if I do I'll post a report.

Obviously it'll be a lot more pricey than just experimenting yourself, but it's worth mentioning.

Well the cymbal that came with my first set( an 18" I think Camber crash/ride) cracked and it's a perty big crack (about 1ft maybe total =P ) It has a cool effect cause there's like a little flap that the metal made when it cracked and now it got inverted(don't remember how though). That flap provides a light little shimmer effect thing and it has a partial sound of a china, perty cool stuff. Wonder what it'd sound like if I drilled a couple holes around it.

I just finished experiment #2... making a rocktagon out of an 18" B8 crash/ride. I compared it to one of the AA Rocktagons. It has the same sound but not the same tone. That meaning it has that same chineseish sound as the AA rocktagon has, but it has the tone of the B8 cymbal (if that makes sence). It kept the same volume as it originally had before i cut into it & it still rings for days. Overall I'd say it's another successful modification.

Sounds like a winner to me. Can you tell us how you cut it? Did you just use
tin snips? What all did you have to do? How did you lay it out? Thanks for the info.

It was pretty easy to to both of the cymbals, For the XS20 Ozone all i did was use a 2" hole drill made for cutting metal, marked where i wanted the holes & went to work. I used a metal file to smooth out the edges.

For the rocktagon i marked out my pattern & & cut it with the bandsaw. Just a couple of straight cuts & smoothed out the edges with a file. Took me all of 15 minutes to do it. Because of the length of the crack that was in the cymbal 2 sides are a little longer than the other 6. The 2 longer sides are 8" & the others are 6".

I also build guitars. I always make a full sized paper template whenever i'm doing a design to make sure everything lays out right. Then I transfer the design to the wood. I used the same method for the cymbols. Make a full size paper template & mark out the design on there. After you have everything how you want it trace the design to the cymbal.
