As far as what cymbal you use that's up to you. With the 2 that I hacked on both of them kept the same tone just the sound changed. The XS20 kept that same bright tone but now sounds really trashy. Same thing with the B8, it kept the same tone it had but sounds more chineseish now. So that's something to keep in mind when choosing the cymbal you'd hack into.

As far as the tools go you'll probably need one of those hole drill bits made for metal & a jigsaw with a metal cutting blade. If you don't have access to a jigsaw you could probably get away with using a hacksaw, it'll just be a little more work. Lastly a metal file to smooth out the edges.

You may want to check ebay & pick up smething used or slightly cracked. I've been able to get some for about 10-15 bucks & if I screwed up I wasn't out that much money. Last thought, I was on musicians friend yesterday & saw that the ZHT EFX cymbal was $100 for the 16". If that's in your price range you may just want to get that one.

For the rocktagon i marked out my pattern & & cut it with the bandsaw. Just a couple of straight cuts & smoothed out the edges with a file.

I always make a full sized paper template After you have everything how you want it trace the design to the cymbal.
Skullman; Thank you for the info. You're layout technique is dead on. Without that step, you would end up with a cartoon.
Good planning= good design=good work.

there's somethin to try out if you have the tools, forgot what the name of the cutter it is but it seems perty easy to do. Maybe gives a cool sound too.

I saw that cymbal in the music shop the other day, you can get some pretty weird sounds from it. It has kind of same sound as if you were taking a old time hand saw or a big sheet of tin & wiggling it around. That's probably the best i can describe the sound without you actually hearing it.

I know what tool your talking about but i don't have one of those. I was thinking od ways to cut it. I guess I could try to do it on the bandsaw or use a side grinder. Bandsaw would probably be the easiest.

cooyo, I wish the shops had more stuff around here for drummers or more shops at that so a person can hear different cymbals. And lol, they're just metal fab shears :P ...

I know there's another tool that isn't/aren't shears but does the same job which is what I was/am thinking about, hmmm.
