Cymbal modification

So I was talking to this guy, he had a Sabian AAX cymbal that had cracked a little. Instead of trashing the cymbal he turned it into an effects cymbal. Specifically he copied the O-zone design. He said it didn't sound exactly the same but it was very very close. This got me thinking, it's fairly easy to pick up some used cymbals on ebay for a fairly cheap price. Why not get one or two & do a little experimental modification & see what can be produce. I was wondering if anyone else has done any similar experimenting & if so what kind of results did you get?

i have fixed many a cracked cymbal by drilling a hole at the end of a crack.
it stpos it from getting worse. the trick is to reinforce the area where your going to drill, and not put more stress on the crack as you drill.

Cut-up

Excellent question Skulman. It will be interesting to see what the replies are.
I would like to know what a larger cymbal sounds like when it's cut down to an 8"-10"-12".

Look Ma, I don't have to throw it away after all.

Hey, that's funny. It certainly would be worth a try on some of the
cheap / trashy cymbals that come with beginners sets. Why not?? It couldn' hoit.

So I picked up a 16" Sabian XS crash cymbal for dirt cheap less than 20 bucks. All it had was a small crack near the bell, nothing bad. I did a little expermental modification on it. I fixed the crack & drilled 6 - 2" holes in it, copying the HHX O-zone design. It's sounds pretty trashy, kinda like a china cymbal but not as harsh. The decay is a little on the quick side. The volume is slightly reduced compared to my other crashes but not so much where it'll get drowned out. Overall I'm pretty pleased with the final result.

I've been messing around with the cymbal for the past half hour or so & discovered it makes for a nice sounding small sized ride. The quick decay makes the "ping" sound really stand out when played as a ride & it doesn't have alot of overtones. If someone will tell me how to post a sound file on here I'll make a recording of it so ya'll can hear how it sounds.

Hurray for you Skullman. I've been waiting for someone to jump on this idea since we talked about it. This could start a whole new market search. We'll have to keep it a secret from the pawn shops and junk stores or the price will start to skyrocket.

Ok, you guys got me wondering. I'm about to buy some B8 Pro's and start bending. Maybe make a rocktagon.

I say go for it. You never know you may produce a great new effex cymbal and save some money in the process. Just keep in mind the final product may sound like crap too. B8's probably would be bad to mess around with, not too expensive & good quality. I think I'm going to look around for some more stuff that has small cracks or dents. Maybe be able to pick up some A customs or K's & breathe new life into them.
