As for, during rhythm(that doesn't look right). ummm yea, you can easily use a splash or china I guess, I know I do, shoot my china fits with some jazz type songs :P and it sounds good. But if I had to pick between the 2 and not just one, ummm, china cause a splash usually'll break sooner. Atleast it seems like it to me.
"break sooner" they only break if you hit em the wrong way. relly I recomend splash first, you can practice other styles of music besides Prog, Punk, and rock Besides "How else can you get $500 bucks for playing in a wedding" -Music store sales person

Also they dont cost more then $100 at the most, also if you want Earn a couple more bucks to get the one you want and even to buy a drum head or two.

Honestly, never broke one just seems like my friends have broke splashes more often than their china, though one did just crack his china, dunno how that worked but I guess he did.

It is good to have both types of cymbals at your disposal as these type of cymbals help to color the music much like the way an artist uses red, green or yellow. Cymbals are a very personal thing, they help you express what you feel in a given musical situation.
So, having said that, choose the cymbal that best fits your playing style.
If i could only have one of the two choices,it will have to be a china, and a 16" one at that because i think that this is the more versatile size.

18" is probable more versital, especily for a splash, or not alot of players would play 18"ers

Er...are you referring to a splash? because the largest splash made is made by Paiste,it is the 2002 series 14" Power Splash, Chinas, however, are made in a wide range of sizes from 8"-24"
