Splash vs China

Hi Guys.

Torn between the two. I already have Zildjian hats, crash, fast crash & ride, but i also want a china or splash. Which one, in you opinion, would you get if you had to choose? Also whats the main difference between these two cymbals sound wise?

Any info and veiws would be great.

Cheers!

D

I would go for the china first. The diffrences between a china and a splash are huge: A splash makes a sound like a small crash. In fact, it is basicly a small crash. It makes a quick and not incredibly loud crash sound and decays quickly. A china, on the other hand, makes a roaring crash sound thats a little hard to describe, if you've never heard one before.

I really reccomend going to your music store and asking that same question. They'd be happy to demonstrate the difference.

Agree with Pyro. It really depends on what your playing at the moment. Sadly I don't own a nice china. So if you find a good one can you let me know???

Another good recource to check out would be Sabian's website, at www.sabian.com and click on "sound check" or just go here: www.sabian.com/english/Webmayhem/soundcheck.cfm I understand you are a Zildjian-man, but I know sabians site and know where to direct you. I'm sure zildjian has something simular.

Here's my 2 cents.
1. I believe that the splash is used much more in most musical application.
2. Small, fast splashes seem to be really hot right now.
3. Nothing matches the sound of a Chinese in the right spot in a song.
4. I really think you need both in your arsenal. I would go for the splash first.
5. I think the Sabian site is cool for sampling. BUT, I would only buy a cymbal that I could walk into a store and hear LIVE. I believe you should NEVER look to see who made it, Just play on the various cymbals, pull down the ones you like.
Then set up one of your cymbals from home & see how the various ones you liked sound with your old one. Most times the results will surprise you.
Last point--Don't be afraid to walk out of the store with NO new cymbals.
Let your own ears be your only judge. Not your friend. Not the label on a cymbal.

Cheers for the advice guys. I play in a three peice rock band - rock/progressive/punk type music, bit of greenday/social distortion/billy talent sort of thing. Don't know whether either cymbol would be preferred in that type of music? Also would you say that the splash cymbol can be used for rythem or mainly in fills?

As I have already said I think of the two the Splash is of more use in most styles of music. If you can afford it buy both but if like me you want to spread the cost splash first......
