I had always wanted a Ping cymbal as my main ride cymbal. When I bought my drumset, I allowed the salesman to talk me out of a Ping and into a Sweet Ride. He said that the Sweet Ride would be much more versatile for all types of music.
Personally, I find the Sweet Ride to be much more "washy" than the Ping. I mean, it has a great wash with lots of bright overtones and IMO, is a great rock ride cymbal BUT, I wanted the Ping cymbal because it has such a nice stick definition and a great bell on which to play. So now, years later, i JUST BOUGHT A PING on e-bay and am excitedly awaiting its' arrival. Bottom line: I don't find the Sweet Ride to be anything like the Ping cymbal and most importantly, it is what YOU WANT IN A CYMBAL AND FROM A CYMBAL that's important. I will finally have the ride cymbal I always wanted once my Ping arrives...............and yes, I will most likely include my sweet ride or one of the other ride cymbals I have, in my setup most times..........just so's I can have that wash if I want it......................but my Ping will most likely always be my favorite...........right up there with my Hi Definition
Zildjian..........which also has great stick def. but with a bit more wash than the Ping. BTW - I too always thought of the Ping to be more for jazz BUT then I read where the drummer for The Black Crowes plays one and I love the sound and feel of his playing...............so it's a cymbal for all genres if you ask me.
