spot drilling, how big of a hole?

So my 12in. china figured to crack, or I cracked it. The crack goes just before the bend of it, it follows the groove of the cymbal. Hasn't reached the edge so yea. Just wondering how big of a hole I should drill on each side so it doesn't keep going around the cymbal and basically make it look like a splash?

Shazaam, you may have to cut out the section of the cymbal where it is cracked (with a hacksaw) after you drill it, as well. You don't want the two sides of the crack vibrating against each other. Drilling works best if you've got a V shaped chunk missing, Then you drill the cymbal at the point of the V. I used to be the equipment guy for the Army reserve band and I've prolonged the life of a couple of cymbals that way. The Hole doesn't have to be very large just make sure it's right at the end of the crack, none of the metal should be cracked beyond the hole. I believe that I used about a 1/8" bit.

=( I don't wanna take out that bit of teh crack though, it makes a "shimmer" effect that's perty sexy. But ok, and also I have no hacksaw or anything that'll be able to cut it like that.

If you like the sound then I would just drill about a 1/8th in hole at the end of the crack to help keep it from spreading. Good luck hope it works out for you.

well, I drilled 1/8 in. holes, like 4 or 5 I think cause it started splitting more before I did and hopefully these'll keep it from splitting anymore. Has an even better "shimmering" effect now to so I'm happy

I'm glad you're happy with the sound, but you may want to start saving for its replacement.

Whenever I've cracked cymbals, that shimmer sounds really cool, but the crack just keeps getting bigger and bigger despite the hole you drill. And once you cut a slice out, the hole thing just sounds a little more dull.

saying i have never broken a cymbal, and hopfully never will i might never try this(did buy 1 broken one from a friend, buy it sounds good), just i wish i had the time to do drilling not cutting, also tools.

yea, I am gonna start saving up for a replacvement/a bigger one. when this guy leaves I'll just get another wuhan considering for 12in it's $10. iono what to get though for a larger one, like an 18 in. I like teh meinl filter china but it's only a 14in and I think it's liek $80 alone. probably get teh xs20 18in, but I'm not sure yet.

What does drilling a hole in the cymbal do?
