Re: your most regretful cymbal purchase?

I remember when i was srtill new to drumming and all i had were the planet Zs that came with my first kit (a ludwig accent which i loved and still do although i have upgraded that as well). I decided i would get some new cymbals so i decided to buy the zildjian ZXTs..........that was a slight mistake. I was not 100% happy witht hem. The crash sounded like a pile of crap. The hi-hats were ok but they were just to heavy and were waaaaay to bright for me. The ride was great in my opinion. I loved that thing. The free china that came with the set wasnt to bad either. I liked that as well. I moved up to a pair of zildjian A customs the next year and love those cymbals to death!

Any Z custom..... I use the A custom and A's, but I still give Z customs a chance and I am always disappointed.

Re: your most regretful cymbal purchase?

In 2005 I bought a Zildjian Z Custom Rock Crash. It lasted about a month. It looked like a sturdy cymbal, and a lot of people told me it was. First of all. I cracked the edge 3 inches up in one clean hit, second of all the sound was disgusting and no where near what I liked. It had such a strong, dirty sound. It didn't blend with any of my other cymbals. I had a AAX Explosion crash at the time, and Zildjian Z Custom Hats (14"), it sounded horrible. I had spent all my money on it (Because I didn't have a job at the time) and the store wouldn't let me refund it for the reason I gave. So I was stuck with it for that whole month. And in the end - it snapped. I hated that cymbal with a passion, it had such a disgusting sound. And even though it looked so strong, it was weaker than any of my other cymbals. I'm a very heavy hitter, and for some reason I find more comfort in hitting thinner cymbals, they last me longer for some reason.

The best cymbal I had was a AAX Explosion crash (18"). It was beautiful. It lasted me a good year. 6 months after buying it it fell on concrete, hitting the edge during an outside show, it lived another 6 months. I was extremely impressed with that cymbal.

Re: your most regretful cymbal purchase?

As a new drummer, (just learning and at an older age), I bought a Yamana Rydeen set from a pawn shop which a young man had given up on. For add-ons, I added another Paiste cymbal, and a set of Rototoms, and a cowbell. Later I added a Simmons SD1 for practice and to help me along. Then I walked into a local used shop to look at the possibility of a couple of cymbal add-ons. I ended up with three, one of which was a 18" Meinl Meteor Crash, in terrible condition, all tarnished and even with some sulfating on the surface. After an hour in my shop, I settled with a tarnished finish, and the cymbal intact. I mounted it, taking off my Paiste 20" ride. The first hit, I was back in the late 60's, my kind of music. I found myself hitting this cymbal more and more. Today, I went back to that same shop where he had a 18" Meinl Meteor Crash/Ride, same tarnished crappy finish. I purchased it for $30. After about an hour with brasso, steel wool and a power drill with a foam pad, I had a reasonably clean cymbal with a fair amount of tarnish, kind of like an aged hammerax. I mounted it, and it sounds slightly different from the initial crash, more sustain. I love these, since they sound like the 60's. If you are a progressive, new age, metal person, you probably won't go for these. If you like to hear Fleetwood play his old kit, or maybe The Who, or Steppenwolf, these are for you. I LOVE them. IMHO!!

Re: your most regretful cymbal purchase?

I have to say my worst experience with cymbals was with my first set I had. My dad bought it for me used and at the time i didnt know the difference because i just started playing drums. But now the two no-name starter crashes that came with the set disgust me. I cringe every time i hit them, then laugh at how bad they sound lol. Also my friends hate them. But now I have a new Tama set and I bought the B8 super set with it. I can't say I love them, but they were definitely worth the price they sound pretty decent and they were really cheap. They're good for now but hopefully if i get enough money i can get some A customs or AAX cymbals, I love the sound of those.

Re: your most regretful cymbal purchase?

My whole drum set actually.
It came with the cymbals.
The crash that came with it is terrible. It's all warped on the edges
and has the shortest sustain ever. I'm getting new cymbals next month though.
The cymbal wont crack!

Re: your most regretful cymbal purchase?

A set of 5 star super zyn's that came with my first drumkit - a secondhand royal star set in about 1978. They were marginally thicker than a sheet of aluminium foil, but not quite so musical. The top hi-hat used to dent inwards every few minutes and had to be popped back out.
I also had a Paiste Formula 602 ride a few years ago that i purchased unheard, and was really disappointed with - a real dustbin lid.

Re: your most regretful cymbal purchase?

the cymbals i got with my first set are the worst ive ever experienced.
on the internet, the brand doesnt exist, and no music store has ever heard of it.
the brand is "GIG" but, whatever.

the hi-hats sound similar to what a street sign sounds like when you hit it, when theyre closed. when they are open, they sound a bit more like cymbals, but still terrible.
as for the crash, its sustain is incredibly too long, and its sound is bad compared to a trash can lid.
