Thumbs down your most regretful cymbal purchase?

well
since i brought my first and so far only drumkit
in 1994 ive been using the same cymbals i brought which are meinl meteors.
one 20 inch ride
one 16 inch crash
and a set of 14 inch top and bottom hi hat cymbals.
i can honestly say that since the day i brought them they have never sounded as cymbals should.
for one thing the crash is just too heavy so that when i hit it with a drumstick instead of reacting with a clear crash sound, it reacts with a dead muffled kind of sound which cant be right for a crash cymbal?
the ride is even worse!
again the sound is dull and muffled no matter what stick i use, and trying to crash with the ride is impossible because you basically get no sound.
i mean the sound is there but its as if they made the ride too heavy so that when you hit it the only sound you get is anything but a crash sound.
even though i know that proberly doesnt make sense because there are heavy rides that ride good and crash too
but my one doesnt.
they are worse than crap.
and last but not least the hi hat cymbals.
they just dont sound right
trying to ride with them is impossible because there is just such a horrible sound which is overpowering.
i basically cant afford the prices of other cymbals
i dont earn enough money for a start.
so i guess that i will always end up going for so called budget packs which means basically cymbals that look like cymbals but sound nothing like a cymbal should.
last year i brought some zildjian rock dip drumsticks only to find that they just sound terrible on my meinls!
using them on my ride sounds so horrible it breaks my heart.
i mean ok the stick head is alot bigger than my jazz plastic tip ones
therefore there is bound to be a difference in sound when the stick hits the cymbal.
but i still think meinl meteor cymbals aint worth anyones cash.
come on share your horror stories about the cymbals you regret buying.

First ever set of hi hats i owned (1980) were the Paiste 101 series. Terrible.

Gigged with them for a while until i could afford some tasty 2002's. The 101's were sold with the Tama Swingstar kit i also had at the time (terrible too).
Still use the 2002's today .

I can't say that I totally regret the B-8 cymbal pack I bought as a beginner, for what I paid for them they were definately a step up from the crap that came with my beginners set. I definately do need to replace them, but I would suggest and what I plan to do is keep my eyes and ears open for good used replacement cymbals, and buy them one at a time. I don't think I'll buy another prepackaged set ever again. Too many options out there, and I kind of like going to the drum / music stores around town and trying out the used cymbals they have in stock. I'm not in a big hurry to upgrade so I have the chance to really be selective this time around.

thanks for sharing your experience.
it was honest and interesting.
im not sure if drum centres in the uk sell 'used replacement cymbals'?
it would be benificial for people that cant afford to buy brand new expensive quality cymbals.
my nearest drum centre is in wembley
and its one of the best...a bit pricey but thats the price one has to pay for quality stuff.
i regulary look on ebay for second hand cymbals but rarely see anything within my price range.
and if there are cymbals up for sale at a low starting price' you can bet your bottom dollar(or pound in my case) that the end price will be alot more.http://www.wembleydrumcentre.com/
by the way ive put up a link to wembley drum centre.

you are the second person to share your disapointment with paiste cymbals.
i honestly am surprised because a well known cymbal making company like paiste i thought only dealt in 'quality'.
i guess it just goes to show......http://www.paiste.com/

Don't get me wrong there, i like Paiste cymbals and have owned many over the years, 602,s, 2000's, 2002,s, Signature, and Alpha models. All great cymbals.

It was just the 101 pot lids that i first owned when i started, that were aweful. The next up the line from then back then that were a bit better sounding were the 505's, but opted for the even better 2002 series, and they have been gigged on regularly for the last 25 years, a good choice. If were to change cymbals i would consider signature series, they are so all purpose and appeal to me. Haven't heard the new 2007 series classics, they read o.k on their web site, yet to reach the stores here to check out.
And then i have enough

I am not one to follow "Brand Names" or other drummer set ups, as many will know. I choose to pick cymbals on their merit to fit the music i play, and by my own choice of what i like the sound of.
My current playing set is Zildjian ride, Paiste HH, Sabian crash, Meinl splash, Zildjian crash, Paiste china.
