What to do with a cracked cymbal? Well, my trusty paiste 802 "16 has bit the dust.
After 5 or more years of loyal service (don't believe me? just listen on my band site below), it's finally gotten a big, ugly crack in it.
Fortunately, I had some old hardware lying around, that I moved on and I'm ready to buy a replacement Alpha or Pst5 (or any other quality substitute around AUD $200 please suggest).
But what to do with all that lovely bronze alloy that I've got laying there in a once great cymbal. Do I simply through it in the bin or is there a better way to get it to someone who could still put it to good use?
I would think that Paiste should be able to melt it down and craft another fine joy disk out of it, but I mailed them and got no response.
So bearing in mind that I don't really want to make an ornament out of it, and have its lifless corpse hanging around my house like a bad smell, What should I do with my old cymbal? |

Re: What to do with a cracked cymbal? Know anyone into metal work, maybe you could try cutting it down to a smaller size cymbal. Might make a good 10 or 12" splash. |

Re: What to do with a cracked cymbal? Go Alpha not PST 5. A little better sound, projection and quality. If you know or have access to a metal shop with a lathe, they can spin it down below the crack and wallah! new crash or splash. Paiste won't recycle that stuff, in fact, I think the "Pulse" cymbal company is either Paiste seconds, or meltdowns by Paiste.
I've seen some cut abstract wierd angles to cut cracks out, or drill a hole at each end of the crack as a quick repair. Good luck! |

Re: What to do with a cracked cymbal? If the crack is not to big you can cut the cymbal near the crack. Or you can cut it in a smaller cymbal like Church Drummer said. There are a lot of things that you can do with a cracked cymbal. If you want to know more mail me some pictures and I'll be glad to help. |

Re: What to do with a cracked cymbal? As it turns out, I did go with a pst5 rock crash over an alpha medium. The sound won out in the end, I prefered the brightness of the pst5 and after scouring every shop in my metro area, that was best thing i could find in my price range. Dude those sabian xs20's are appalling!! Honestly the B8's Piss all over them!
Anyway, I have always liked the idea of getting a third crash on my kit, but never got around to it, so I'm gonna get a new cymbal arm (I'll need this even if I don't keep the cymbal) and work the old gem back onto the kit to see if I like it. A cheap way of testing out the setup.
So maybe I will have to find a metal shop to laythe the crack out. Thanks for help guys. |

Re: What to do with a cracked cymbal? Cutting cymbals down is risky, because of the diameter and weight, they tend to end up like hitting a heavy high hat top as a crash. Dead. |
