Hi Hats

Just a little quirky survey here. Curious on how far you keep your hi-hats from your snare and do you keep them high or down only a few inches from the snare. One thing that I'm finding out is that when I lower my hats closer to the snare it occasionally interferes with my left snare hand.
Peace out!

Re: Hi Hats

6 1/2 inches (16cm) from bottom hat to snare rim. Everyone is different.

To reduce clutter, weight and enable easier pack down, i cut the excess from the hi hat stand clutch rod, leave around 4" protruding from top hat, enough to fit clutch on.

Re: Hi Hats

I was going to do the same survey, well possibly with seat height too, my hi hat stand is to my waist( wile standing up, with closed hats). I think it makes it easier for blast beats(I hate them), also the basic beat(i don't always like my sticks break that fast and I sometimes use my hat bell). sorry if you can't understand, the heat!

Re: Hi Hats

I put my hats at the height where I can place the bead of my stick easily on the top hat, instead of having use the shaft of the stick and I put my snare just slightly higher than my leg so that I can play rimshots. I think that's about 7 or 8 inches, but like mouse said, everyone's different.

Basicly the same here, just my snare is for gravity beats, and firecracker height is for rims.

About the same here. I like to keep the edge of hats about even with the edge of the snare and maybe 4 to 5 inches above. I also like my snare mostly parallel to ground & from about level with on up to an inch or so above my legs.

Re: Hi Hats

My hats are about 6" (15-16cm) from my snare rim. I like to keep them fairly close so that I can reach easily with my right hand (I'm left handed) for sixteenth note patterns etc, but not too low otherwise I hit them with the back of my hand all the time.

Talking Re: Hi Hats

Hi All,

I am fitting the general trend here, HI Hats approx. 150mm (six inches) above the snare. I keep the distance between the hats around 30mm ( 1.25 inch).
This is also an important measurement, I assume that we talk about the distance to the snare in case of closed high hats?

Cheers and Happy drumming

Harry
