boom stands, and cymbal stands Hey guys, I currently have one crash, one ride, and a pair of hi hats, but only have one hi hat stand, and a cymbal stand....
what I want to do is use my cymbal stand for my ride, get another crash and two more stands
but my question is whats the difference between boom stands, and normal cymbal stands? does it matter if I get a cymbal stand or a boom stand for my crashes?
Also, I currently have a 16' crash, what should my other size be?
Thanks GUYS! |

Re: boom stands, and cymbal stands Eventually as your kit gets bigger (they always do!) you're going to want boom stands because they give you more opportunity to place the cymbals up and over your toms exactly where you want them. I have my ride cymbal on a boom stand too because I like it right above my right foot bass drum and there's no way to place a straight stand in that position.
Also, now they sell very cool and cheap cymbal hardware which attaches to the boom end of a boom stand so you can put two cymbals on one stand. I bought one last week (Taye brand) for $6 Canadian. That might work for you...invest in a more expensive boom stand and get an attachment so you can rig both crashes on the same stand.
Cymbal selection is a very personal thing. It depends on the kind of music you'll be playing, but for me, a 16" crash is on the big, deep sounding side. I rely very heavily on a 14 " crash. It's what you need to accentuate snare and bass accents -- it's got punch but doesn't linger too long.
If I were you I'd consider a 10" splash cymbal. It would be cheaper, it would mount nicely beside another cymbal on the same stand, and I think every drummer needs one! Think Police, think light jazz accents, think funky fills. |

Re: boom stands, and cymbal stands Hey Ryder, If you haven't already seen it, check out the thread under the Drummer Shrine forum entitled "Check out this innovative thinking." The member has given us a clip of Marco Minneman's playing. You'll see what I mean about the versatility and usefulness of a splash cymbal. |

Re: boom stands, and cymbal stands Thanks guys, and really good video too
Yeah since I'm getting paid today I plan on buying a splash, one crash (a 14), and two boom stands (since my kit is small and not loaded yet) I also plan on getting a double bass pedal.
Also, do splash cymbals just use regular stands as well?
Is there any other special effect cymbals you recommend?
last question if you dont mind I've seen many crash cymbals with holes whats the point of the holes?!
thanks again for the help
P.S Stewart Copeland is my favorite drummer so I kinda want to have a similar sound as his

Re: boom stands, and cymbal stands i have often seen splash cymbals go on the attachment arms that you can attach to the cymbal stand.(what slingerland was talking about) I have to have a china cymbal because it kind of goes with my style. it depends on what style play you have. i would also reccomend a 18 or 19 inch crash, but again thats just what i would get, and it depends on your preferences... and the holes in the cymbals i think was more popular back in the 60's and 70's. not sure what it does, i think it helps with the sustain and balance of the cymbal. good luck! |

Re: boom stands, and cymbal stands For some reason I can't start a new thread so I thought this would be a good spot for this story.
Earlier today I was setting back up my set after a gig and I noticed there was a rattle in the cymbal stand that I mounted the tom on. So I took apart the stand and in the middle section of the stand a roll on money was sticking out. I took it out and there were 6 $100 bills |
