special effect cymbals

Hi, I was wondering what special effect cymbals are a necessity for a standard rock drummer? I play mostly new wave, prog rock, and punk

Thanks

its all up to your preferences and what sounds you like but some of the most popular effects cymbals are splashes (which are like small crashes with quick decay) and chinas (trashy oriental sound)

+1

Just because you buy a splash doesn't mean that you can't throw another splash
on top of that one for a different sound. Cymbal stacking is another area to
dabble in. Any sound can work it's way in... it is all in the execution.

Re: special effect cymbals

Oh ya, if I had some extra cash lying around I'd go out and buy an extra splash cymbal (I already overplay a 10" splash) and a china. I used to turn an old cheap cymbal upside down to try and get that trashy sound, but there's no substitute for a big, beautiful china.

Ringo, have you checked out the youtube clip of Marco Minneman yet? It's in the Drummers Shrine part of the forum under a byline related to "innovative thinking." You'll go ga ga over his cymbals.

Re: special effect cymbals

I agree, splashes and a china would be excellent.
Also consider sizes and types of crashes.
For example: 14" thin crash, 16" medium crash and an 18" crash go nicely together, added to a china ( 14" or a 20" or both!) , and a splash or two ( 10" and 6") then I think you will have all bases covered regarding the music styles you listed in your original post.

Good luck and happy cymbal shopping
