A Custom Projection Hi-Hat Recommendations Please

I am looking to upgrade Planet Z hi-hat. Although I am a beginner, I plan to stay with it. I have an opportunity to pick up a set of A Custom Projection hi hats. I want to be able to enjoy a nice sound when I strike the high-hat. What are your opinions of the A Custom Projection series Hi-Hat?

First rule of cymbals: every, single cymbal on the planet is different. One set of A Custom Projection series Hi-Hats will not sound like the next set of A Custom Projection series Hi-Hats. Listen to drummers you like, think about the sounds you like from hi-hats, then try them with the rest of your kit and if you like those, then buy those.

Fundamentally, anything should be better then your planet Z's. All cymbals may be different, but I haven't heard a good sounding Z yet.

I've been using the Zildjian New Beat Hi hat for that high crisp sharp sound.

You need to go to the stores and try out what your taste in sound is.

According to what type of drumming your getting into.

Skinslapper is 100% correct--- every cymbal is slightly different. They try to get a consistent "range" of sound out of the cymbals when they make them and some manufacturers have a prototype that they try to match as a reference, but even the machine processed cymbals that are done exactly the same every time sound slightly different...

All that said, the A Custom Brilliant you refer to are generally BRIGHT and LOUD in the open position with a tight "chick" in the closed position. There are many different lines in the A Custom family, so there are some different sounds even within that category to choose from. They are made of B20 bronze--the best type of bronze for cymbals, and are pro-grade.

Here's Zildjian's site where you can hear samples of their A Custom hi-hat reference sounds:

Zildjian.com - en-US

Hope it helps!

Good luck!
