Identical cymbals?

Hey guys,
I've been looking for 1-2 new cymbals for my set and I'm wondering...
Should I get 2 of the same cymbal?
To put on ech side of the set?
or 1 crash ride and 1 medium crash?
Tell me what you think!

Re: Identical cymbals?

Personally, I like to have different cymbal sounds around the kit. I like a dark, big crash near my hi-hats with a more controlled response and a medium decay. On the ride side (were you come off the toms in a fill usually) I like a fast responding fast decaying crash with more volume for a quick crash sound out of a fill in easy reach. I like having a higher-pitched cymbal somewhere in the middle--above the rack toms for a quick easy-access accent (usually a small crash or a splash).

I shy away from matched cymbals because I think the diversity in sound adds to my overall sound....

Yeah personally, I wouldn''t waste money on trying to purchase 2 of the same cymbal.

Instead I aim to have 2 crashes with similar brightness, attack and decay and complementing predominant tones. That way when you hit them at the same time, it sounds like you're smashing the worlds most awesome crash and in between, great different sounds to accentuate the song.

Yeah I think thats what I'm gonna do.
I'm going to get 1 medium crash and 1 crash ride.
Is that a good mix?

Re: Identical cymbals?

Just go and try cymbals, find what works for you. Forget labels.

Yeah good point skin.
I guess I should go to Guitarcenter and check out the cymbal room.

Check out used cymbals, they can sound better, and a better price (you should look at my Daddy's Junky music store, only go there for cymbals and big stick deals)
